Why is Channel Drainage so important?

Buying a house is a huge investment – arguably the biggest one you will make in your whole lifetime. Naturally, you want to make sure that everything is in top condition, otherwise, you could be forking out a lot more on remedial work.

For instance, pooling water can cause structural damage to your property and create a safety hazard around traffic and pedestrianised areas. Although frequently overlooked, installing channel drainage can prevent rain and surface runoff from causing havoc at your home.

Here we look at what exactly channel drainage is and what makes it so essential.

What is channel drainage?

A channel drain (sometimes called a trench drain) is a type of linear drain that moves water from paved, tarmacked or concreted areas through an underground drainage system.

Channel drains can be made from different materials, including plastic and concrete. Yet, despite this, most are made from polypropylene – a lightweight plastic that boasts a sturdy construction and chemical resistance. As such, they are an excellent choice for domestic applications, and commonly used on driveways, garages, gardens, patios, water features and walkways. They are ideal for airports, car parks, golf courses, tennis courts and pool decks too.

When it comes to choosing channel drainage from Total Pipeline Systems, you have one of two options:

- HDPE (high-density polyethylene) grating
- Galvanised grating

Both grates are long-lasting and removable for easy cleaning – keeping water flowing without any obstructions. The key difference lies within your desired finish and budget. The cheapest option is channel drainage with HDPE grating whilst, for a few pounds more, the galvanised grating offers a more modern and refined look.

Why channel drainage matters?

There are several reasons why you should install channel drainage, one of the main ones being to manage surface water.

It offers a long-term solution for dealing with excess water, ultimately preventing damage to the foundations – not to mention dampness.

While poor drainage is a serious problem for your house, it can also have an impact on your garden or drive. For instance, when water doesn’t drain efficiently, your beautiful garden will soon become a muddy mess – meaning the kids won’t be able to play out – and you won’t be able to get into your car without stepping in a big puddle. Having a decent channel drainage system in place will make it easier for you to control water flow after heavy downpours and reduce soil erosion.
