Common Winter Drainage Problems And How You Can Avoid Them - Total Pipeline Systems

Your drainage system is extremely vulnerable in the winter; here’s how you can protect it.

With the frost, snow and Baltic temperatures that winter brings, your drainage pipes and systems are left extremely vulnerable – so it’s important you know how to keep them working properly, to ensure no issues arise.

Faults with your drainage system tend to be worse in the winter – they can be unpleasant and costly to repair, sometimes rendering you unable to use certain taps and systems in your home, which most definitely will be a struggle as well as a massive inconvenience.

Here’s a list of things you can do to help keep you and your home safe during the harsh winter months.

Have Your Drains Looked At

This is the time of year when you’re most likely to find leaves, twigs, branches and other debris blocking your drains.

Leaving them to build up can result in overflows in or outside your property – here’s what you should do:

  • Check that your pipes, including your gutters and downpipes, aren’t blocked and clear any debris you find in there.
  • Keep an eye out for signs of frozen pipes – if water seems to be flowing slow or is backing up in the drain, its more than likely frozen pipes.

Insulate Your Pipes

Any pipes that are exposed to the elements should be insulated properly – to minimise the risk of blocked or burst pipes.

Once your pipes have been exposed to extreme cold, they can end up freezing which can increase the likelihood of water outage.

Insulating your pipes will keep them functioning as they should throughout the winter – protecting your property as well as yourself.

Other ways you can keep your pipes insulated is to keep your property’s temperature above 12 degrees Celsius – even while you’re away, to make sure they stay warm and adequately above freezing.

Fix Any Leaks And Drips

No matter the season, it’s always important you inspect your pipes for any leaks and drips and have them repaired as soon as you can.

In the winter, any water being released is likely to freeze, exposing your property to further problems, like water outages for example.
